*this is my dublin, with Brian Fenton

Last updated Jun 26, 2024

Dublin footballer Brian Fenton certainly knows his way around this city. Widely regarded as one of the best midfielders in the history of GAA, Fenton is a native of Dublin’s north suburb, Raheny.

For the last in the series of *this Is my Dublin, we caught up with Brian on his go-to recommendations for having a whopper day in our glorious city.

Favourite place to grab a coffee?

Brian’s favourite place to grab a coffee on the go is Bua, a coffee container that got started during covid and is now a thriving social hub based in Drumcondra. Fun fact, ‘Bua’ is Irish for ‘victory’ or ‘win’. We don’t think it’s a coincidence that this is Brian’s coffee spot of choice!

A go-to for food?

Brian’s top pick for food is Stoneybatter’s Social Fabric Café. Serving delicious, freshly prepared brunch, lunch and lots of homemade sweet treats, they’re open 7 days a week and have a relaxed and friendly vibe. Winners of the 2024 Irish Enterprise award, on their menu you'll find all the crowd-pleasers from eggs benedict and pancakes to buddha bowls and Turkish eggs.

Where to go for evening drinks?

Where do GAA superstars like to drink of an evening? Well, Brian is a big fan of Bar 1661, which is tucked away just off Capel Street in Dublin 7. Voted Ireland’s Bar of the Year in 2022 and winner of the Best Cocktail Experience in 2023, this cocktail bar is famous for its innovative poitin cocktails. Watching the skilled mixologists at work is half the fun!

A lesser known place?

The seaside village of Howth is Brian’s top pick when it comes to exploring a lesser known place around Dublin. There’s lots to love about this picturesque spot by the sea, complete with fish and chip shops, seafood restaurants as well as a beautiful cliff walk.

A must-visit?

Brian’s must-visit is the Gravity Bar in the Guinness Storehouse, for unbeatable 360 views of Dublin City. Voted the world’s leading tourist attraction at the World Travel Awards in 2023, it seems he’s not alone in his love for the place!

Advice from a local?

Brian's advice for anyone visiting Dublin? By all means pay the famous Temple Bar a visit, but make sure you get out and explore other parts of the city, too. There’s lots to see and do!
